Electric cars are rapidly gaining popularity in Ukraine. Kiev has long been the center of the electric car movement: here you can meet Tesla, Nissan Leaf, Hyundai Kona Electric, Volkswagen ID.4 and dozens of other models. But how realistically convenient is it to use an electric car in the capital? Let's break it down in order.

🔋 Charging infrastructure in Kiev

The main concern of every electric car owner is where to charge.

  • Networks of charging stationsThe major operators in Kiev are GO TO-U, AutoEnterprise, Ionity, TOKA, UGV Chargers and others.

  • Speed chargersThere's a lot of activity going on in the city DC stations 50-150 kW, where you can charge a car in 30-60 minutes.

  • Slow Charges (AC): located in courtyards, shopping malls, business centers, near gas stations and even cafes. They are suitable for recharging at night or while shopping.

📍 Today there are already hundreds of charging points in Kyiv, and along key highways (Victory Avenue, Bazhana Avenue, Okruzhnaya Road) there are whole clusters of electric charging stations.

💰 Charging cost

  • At public stations: on average 6-9 UAH per 1 kW⋅h. For a small electric car it is approximately 120-150 UAH for a full "tank" (200-250 km of travel).

  • On home chargersThe night tariff of 1.68 UAH/kW⋅h is even cheaper. Full charging costs only 40-70 UAH.

👉 For comparison: a gasoline car with consumption of 8 l/100 km spends about 400-500 UAH for the same mileage. The savings are obvious.

🚦 Electric car in city traffic

Kiev is known for its traffic jams, but here electric cars have advantages:

  • Regeneration mode saves energy and extends the driving range.

  • Instant acceleration - It is convenient when changing lanes and starting at traffic lights.

  • Compact models (Leaf, e-Golf, i3) great for tight streets and parking lots.

On average, even in traffic jams, the electric car uses less energy than on the highway, so city driving is optimal for it.

🅿️ Parking and benefits

  • Electric cars in Kiev enjoy a number of advantages.

  • Free parking in municipal zones is one of the nicest perks.

  • In some shopping malls and business centers, separate places with charging stations have been allocated for electric cars.

🌍 Long distance travel from Kiev

For short city trips, an electric car is ideal. But if you plan to travel outside the capital, you need to take into account:

  • There is a network of charging stations along the Kiev-Lviv, Kiev-Odessa, Kiev-Harkov highways.

  • On fast chargers, you can "add" 100-150 kilometers in 20-30 minutes.

  • But still the trip requires planning: the range of 250-400 km obliges to think over stops in advance.

⚡ Convenience in everyday life

✅ Cheaper to operate: savings on fuel and maintenance (no oil, plugs, belts).
✅ Environmentally friendly: no emissions, cleaner air in the city.
✅ Quiet and comfortable: the electric car drives smoothly and almost silently.
❌ Cons: you need to plan for charging, and range can drop by 20-30% in winter.

📌 Bottom line

Living with an electric car in Kiev conveniently enough:

  • there are more and more charging stations,

  • operation is many times cheaper than the internal combustion engine,

  • there are parking and tax incentives,

  • in the city, it's got plenty of range.

The only nuance is long-distance travel. Here, an electric car requires route planning and time for recharging. But for everyday driving around Kiev, an electric car is not the future, but a comfortable reality. 🚗⚡
