Refueling seems to be a simple matter - drive up, choose a gun, pour fuel and drive on. But it is at this stage that many motorists make mistakes that can kill the engineIn some cases, a single wrong fuel choice can turn into a problem of tens of thousands of hryvnias. And sometimes just one wrong choice of fuel turns into a problem worth tens of thousands of hryvnias.

To prevent this from happening, it's important to understand: not every fuel is suitable for your vehicleand not all fuels can be mixed. In this article, we will look at them in detail, what fuel should never be used to refuel a carWhat an error leads to and how to act if you accidentally filled the wrong one.

1. a gasoline vehicle cannot be fueled with diesel ❌

This is one of the most common rookie mistakes. Sometimes drivers are in a hurry, get distracted, get caught at a gas station at night - and pour diesel fuel into the gasoline tank.

What's going to happen?

  • Diesel is significantly heavier and oilier than gasoline.

  • A gasoline-powered engine is just won't be able to run.

  • If the car starts (on leftover gasoline), it will start to trot, stutter, and stall.

  • The diesel gets into the injectors, clogs the spark plugs and forms a thick soot.

Implications:

  • damage to the fuel system;

  • clogging of the catalytic converter;

  • engine failure;

  • repair from 5 000 to 40 000 UAHdepending on the model.

2. A diesel vehicle cannot be fueled with gasoline ❌

Here it is even worse than in the previous case. If gasoline enters a diesel engine, the consequences are almost instantaneous.

Why is it dangerous?

  • Gasoline works like a solvent and "washes" the lubricant off the parts.

  • The fuel pump (high pressure fuel pump) is designed for diesel and is lubricated by it. Gasoline deprives it of protection.

  • Diesel injectors are very precise - gasoline burns them up.

What's going to happen?

  • engine can tear from the inside even after a few minutes of work;

  • the entire fuel line is damaged;

  • the car could be completely out of commission.

💸 Repair - from 20 000 to 150 000 UAH.
And sometimes the engine has to be replaced.

3. Do not use gasoline below the recommended octane rating ❌ 3.

For example, if the manufacturer requires 95, you can't fill up with 92.
If it requires 98, you can't have 95.

Why?

Low octane causes detonation - explosive combustion of the mixture. It's like little hammer blows on the pistons thousands of times a second.

What's the risk?

  • the pistons are melting;

  • the valves are cracking;

  • the spark plug breaks;

  • the catalytic converter's burnt out.

Repairs - from 10 000 to 60 000 UAH.

4. Do not mix different types of diesel: summer + winter diesel ❌

Many people think it's safe, but that's not always the case.

Why is it dangerous?

  • Summer diesel fuel thickens already at -5...-10 °C.

  • Winter fuel is designed to -20...-30 °C.

  • Their mixing in freezing temperatures leads to waxing - fuel crystallization.

What happens in the end?

  • the filters are clogged;

  • the fuel system is not receiving fuel;

  • the car stalls or doesn't start at all.

5. Euro-5 diesel cannot be refueled with Euro-3 or Euro-2 fuel ❌

Modern diesel engines (especially European engines) are very sensitive to fuel quality.

In old diesel (Euro-2, Euro-3):

  • more sulfur;

  • a lot of impurities;

  • less lubricating additives;

  • coarse fraction of fuel.

What are the dangers of improper fuel?

  • instant DPF filter failure;

  • clogging of the EGR system;

  • wear and tear on the fuel injector;

  • problems with common rail systems.

Repairs can cost 50 000-120 000 UAH.

6. Do not fill gasoline with additives of unknown origin ❌

This is a common problem at small private gas stations or "garage" gas stations.

There are additives:

  • octane correctors;

  • cleansing compounds;

  • flavorings;

  • cheap liquefiers.

Why is it dangerous?

  • the nozzles are getting plaque;

  • spark plugs fail quickly;

  • the fuel pump is overheating;

  • the fuel may not match the octane declared.

7. Older vehicles should not be filled with too "clean" gasoline or premium fuel ❌

It sounds strange, but it's true.
Older motors (especially pre-2000s) are designed to different fuel chemistry and higher additive content.

Premium gasoline can:

  • to dissolve old deposits;

  • cause clogs in the system;

  • lead to leaks through old seals.

8. Do not fill fuel with water or condensation ❌

It occurs if:

  • the gas station hasn't had its tanks cleaned in a while;

  • you're filling up at questionable stations;

  • the refueling tank is empty (when "pulling from the bottom").

Implications:

  • the engine's running;

  • the car's stalling;

  • there's rust in the tank;

  • filters and pump fail.

9. Do not fill with poor quality gas (for LPG cars) ❌

If the vehicle is gas powered, it's important to remember:

  • cheap gas has a lot of oil impurities;

  • blood pressure can be erratic;

  • poor quality leads to slamming, intake explosions.

10. What should you do if you accidentally fill the "wrong" fuel?

1. Do not start the engine. At all.

If the engine was not started - you saved the auto.

2. Call a tow truck.

Even if it feels like "I'm going to literally drive 50 meters".

3. Drain the fuel completely.

From tank + lines + filters.

4. Flush the system.

5. Refill the correct fuel again.

11. How do I know if a gas station is spilling bad fuel?

Note to self:

  • too low a price;

  • old speakers;

  • lack of quality certificates;

  • a strong odor of sulfur;

  • strange behavior after refueling.

Better Use:

  • OKKO

  • WOG

  • UPG

  • KLO

  • BRSM (discreetly)

  • Socar

Summary

Every driver should know: a mistake at the gas station can be very costly..
Only fuel the vehicle with the fuel specified by the manufacturer. Do not mix different types of diesel, do not choose gasoline below the recommended octane and it is strictly forbidden to confuse gasoline with diesel.

If in doubt, it is better to ask than to repair the engine for tens of thousands of hryvnias.
