For experienced drivers, proper parking is a key skill. This is what much attention is paid to during the driving training process. Depending on the type of parking, maneuvers may vary. Let's look at the basic parking rules, as well as tips for choosing a parking place.
Parking rules in Ukraine
According to Ukrainian traffic regulations, parking means stopping a car for more than 5 minutes. On some sections of the road, stopping a car is prohibited:
- on narrow roads;
- on railway and tram tracks;
- on the left side of a highway with a dividing strip;
- on lawns;
- near public transport stops;
- along the parked cars in a second row.
In addition, you cannot stop on bridges, overpasses, tunnels and overpasses. At night, parking on the side of the road and in places with limited visibility is prohibited.
Minimum distances must be observed: at least 10 meters from pedestrian crossings, road works and intersections. It is also prohibited to park next to garbage bins if the distance to them is less than 5 meters. You can stop on the sidewalks, but pedestrians must have enough space to pass - at least 2 meters.
Parking in Kyiv has its own peculiarities. Paid parking must be equipped with parking meters or barriers, and information signs indicating the cost and payment methods must be placed on the territory.
Basic parking methods
Parking can be done either forward or reverse, depending on the situation. Forward requires more space to maneuver, while reverse allows you to park in a smaller area.
Parallel parking
When parallel parking, you can use either forward or reverse gear. If you park forward, you need to:
- Drive into a parking space.
- Correct the position in reverse.
When parking at the curb, it is important not to make sudden stops. It is recommended to turn on the right turn signal 1.5 meters before the curb and divide the space to it into three parts, then move 2/3 of this distance. Parking should be slow and careful. Some instructors advise using rear-view mirrors, but this method is not always effective, especially at speeds of 10-15 km/h.
Perpendicular parking
Perpendicular parking can be done in two ways:
- In the free area:
- We drive along a row of parked cars.
- We align the front wheels with the rear of the neighboring car.
- We turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and continue driving until we enter a parking space.
- We move in reverse, aligning the wheels.
- Reverse with maneuver:
- We drive straight behind the parked cars, leaving a distance of 2 meters.
- We turn the front wheels to the right and move in reverse, going around the neighboring car.
- When the distance to the neighboring car decreases to 20 cm, we align the wheels and continue driving.
Recommendations for choosing a parking place
For safe parking, it is important to choose the right place. Basic tips:
- Covered parking is the best option for protecting your car from sun, rain and snow.
- For outdoor parking, choose well-lit areas, away from dry trees and old buildings that could damage your vehicle.
