Traffic Violation Cameras: How They Work and How to Avoid Fines

Cameras for automatic recording of traffic violations are installed to improve road safety, reduce accidents and reduce mortality. However, many drivers are interested in the question: is it possible to avoid fines if the system has recorded a violation?

How do traffic violation cameras work?

The principle of operation of automatic recording cameras is quite simple. The device records the violation, after which it transmits the information to the Data Processing Center of the National Police of Ukraine. Special software recognizes the state registration number of the vehicle and compares it with the database. Based on this information, a protocol is generated, which is signed by a police officer.

Once approved, the protocol is printed and sent in paper form to the owner of the vehicle at the registration address. If the vehicle was rented, the fine is issued to the company that provided the vehicle for rent.

Renting a car from Best Rental, the driver becomes a trusted person of the rental company for the period of use of the car. Accordingly, responsibility for compliance with traffic rules and possible fines falls on the renter.

What violations do cameras record in Ukraine?

At the moment, photo and video recording cameras in Ukraine only record speeding. After recording a violation, the vehicle owner is sent a notice of the fine, which arrives on average in 3-5 days. The driver has 10 days from the moment of receiving the notice to file a complaint and try to challenge the fine.

How to avoid speeding fines?

The most effective way to avoid fines is to strictly follow traffic rules and not exceed the speed limit. This will not only save money, but also improve road safety.

However, the system of recording traffic violations in Ukraine is still imperfect. According to the Constitution, legal responsibility for administrative violations should be personal. This means that the fine for speeding should be received by the person who was driving at the time of the violation. However, in Ukraine, a fine is automatically issued to the owner of the car, even if another person with the right to drive the vehicle was driving.

If a fine is issued to a car owner who did not commit the violation, he has the right to challenge the ruling in court. In the future, changes in legislation are possible that will allow violators to be identified not only by the car number, but also by facial recognition systems similar to those already used in the United States.

How to check for fines?

In order to promptly learn about fines and be able to appeal them in a timely manner, it is recommended to register in Electronic driver's account. This service allows you to track all the orders issued to the owner of the vehicle. It is also worth regularly checking the mailbox at the place of registration, since fines can come in paper form.

When can a fine be successfully challenged?

The car owner can achieve the cancellation of the fine in the following cases:

  • There was another person behind the wheel, and the owner of the car did not commit an offence.
  • The recording camera was installed on a section of the road without a corresponding warning sign.
  • The police crew monitoring the camera did not turn on the blue flashing lights on their vehicle.

Summary

To avoid getting fines for speeding, it is enough to follow traffic rules and control your speed. However, if the decision on the fine was received illegally, it can be challenged in court, especially if the violation was recorded in violation of the established requirements.
