Transporting children in a car is not just a matter of convenience, it is also a matter of forward thinking security. A car seat is a key item that can save a child's life in an accident. But up to what age must be used by law in Ukraine? What types of car seats are there and what threatens the driver for violation? We tell you in detail.


🚔 What does the law of Ukraine say?

According to Traffic rules of Ukraine, the transportation of children in a motor vehicle is governed by 21.11(e), which prohibits :

"Transporting children less than 145 cm tall or under 12 years old without the use of special restraint systems (car seats) appropriate to the weight and height of the child."

Thus, car seat is mandatoryif:

  • child less than 12 years, or

  • his height less than 145 cm.

This means that even if a child is over 12 years old but under 145 cm, a seat is still needed. And vice versa - if the height exceeds 145 cm before the age of 12, the seat may not be used legally.


👮‍♂️ Penalties for not wearing a car seat

As of 2020, the following are in force in Ukraine fines for improper transportation of children:

  • First case: 510 UAH

  • Repeated offense within one year: 850 UAH

The police can stop a car and issue a ticket if there is a child in the car without a car seat or if a seat that is not appropriate for the child's height and weight is being used.

A car seat reduces the risk of a child being killed in a traffic accident:

  • on 70% in a frontal collision;

  • on 50% - in side impact;

Car seats are divided into groups according to the child's weight (and therefore age):

👶 Group 0/0+ (up to 13 kg, from birth to 12 months)

  • Installed against traffic.

  • Supports the infant's neck and head.

👶 Group 1 (9-18 kg, 9 months to 4 years)

  • Seat with its own straps.

  • Installed in the direction of travel.

👧 Group 2/3 (15-36 kg, 4 to 12 years)

  • Boosters or high-back chairs.

  • Used in conjunction with a regular seat belt.

Only if the following conditions are met:

  • Child over 12 years old And above 145 cm;
